Coming off a thrilling Game 6 rally that went to extra innings, the Cards used a solid six innings of work from ace Chris Carpenter to put away the Rangers who struggled all game to get any momentum going after the first inning. 

The Cardinals already made headlines by miraculously sneaking into into the playoffs after being as much as 10.5 games out of the Wild Card back in August.  However, very few saw this championship run coming which started with ousting the supposedly unbeatable Phillies, then the Brewers and finally overcoming the Texas Rangers who until the end of Game 6; looked like a team destined to capture its first ever World Series title.

Unsung heroes such as World Series MVP David Freese and outfielder Allen Craig paved the way for the Red Birds with all of the clutch home runs and extra-base hits the two provided all series.  

Congrats to Matt Smith and the St. Louis Cardinals.

This post is going to be slightly different from our norm and will have more of a personal touch to it.

Well, the Dallas Mavericks have finally done it. After over a decade of regular season excellence which all previously concluded with one underachieving and heartbreaking outcome after another, the Mavs have won the 2011 NBA Finals and are now world champions.

Pictured below is my still-intact ticket stub from Game 1 of the 2006 Finals that featured the first original matchup between the Mavs and the Miami Heat. All the way up until the end of Sunday’s Game 6, I suppose you could have called me a loser for hanging onto something so insignificant yet meaningful at the same time as it evoked memories of joy and eventual pain.

My apologies for getting sentimental here but I’ll admit for the last five years watching the Mavs bow out early in the playoffs in head-scratching fashion each time, I’d often pull this ticket stub out of the collection of other random crap I have to remind myself that these Mavs did indeed play for an NBA title before. It also made me wonder if they would ever get back there again in my lifetime.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to fly back to Dallas and try to catch a game this time around due to work and travel constraints. Otherwise, there would be a pic of a ticket stub from one of the games from this series as well.

Nobody aside from Charles Barkley thought these Mavs had a shot at going far in this year’s playoffs. The Blazers were the trendy pick to pull off a 1st round upset, the defending champion Lakers were supposed to annihilate the Mavs because they were just too soft and the Thunder were going to be too athletic and play too fast for them to keep up.

In the midst of the second round sweep of the Lakers, my buddies back home in Texas and I jokingly/hopingly said to each other that it’d be great that if the Mavs somehow make a run to the Finals; they would also get a shot at payback/redemption and face the Heat.

There’s no better definition of poetic justice than having the Mavs cap off their amazing playoff run and clinch the title on Miami’s home court the very same way they did to Dallas in 2006. Even more sweeter is that they did it against the Big 3 in Wade, Bron and Bosh. Still hard to believe the Mavs accomplished this feat that my friends and I have been waiting for since 2001 (The year the Mavs returned to the playoffs after over a decade-long postseason drought.) when we were just 12 years old at the time.

Don’t you fret AvsDynasty; Bron’s time will come sooner than you think and at some point, your Miami Heat will have won not 7, not 6, not 5, not 4, not 3, not 2 but at least 1 NBA title at the very least. As the Mavs have shown, these things don’t happen overnight.

Well, enough ranting and back to business. We’ll be getting the Mavs NBA Champs hats hopefully around Tuesday or Wednesday this week. Once we get them, they’ll be live on our site at HatClub.com along with a whole new set of New Era custom fitteds and Zephyr snapbacks that just arrived at our warehouse.

Feels good man. Feels damn good.

RIP Lakers’ 3-Peat Aspirations 4-12-11

The year will be full of intrigue with many experts and fans predicting the Boston Red Sox to dominate the American League and taking on either the Philadelphia Phillies or Atlanta Braves in the World Series.

Storylines that are sure to be looming over the course of the season include:

• What to expect from the defending champs? Were the 2010 Giants a flash in the pan with their surprising playoff run or are they set up to take over the playoffs again this October?
• Can the New York Yankees expect to go far with their current pitching rotation or do they have to make a trade for a starter or two at some point during the year?
• How will the Albert Pujols contract extension talks play out with the St. Louis Cardinals? Will this be his last year in the STL?
• Can the Texas Rangers rebound from their World Series loss and return to the playoffs after going through a few changes on their roster; notably the non-resigning of former ace Cliff Lee?
• Are the Oakland A’s poised to turn heads and make a surprise pennant run in the same manner their Bay Area rival Giants did last year with a simple formula of strong young pitching and timely hitting by veteran players many have collectively written off?

Let’s check back at the end of the season and see how ridiculous any of these notions will have become or how much truth there was to them at the beginning of the year.

Following suit with Steve Young in replacing a legendary quarterback, Rodgers threw for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns; being named Super Bowl MVP and forever silencing critics wondering if he could ever replace Brett Favre by matching #4 in championships won.

The Packers were able to hold on as the Steelers nearly rallied from being down 21-3 early and only trailed 31-25 late in the 4th quarter. Pittsburgh’s attempt at a game-winning drive was halted after a 4th down incompletion with 49 seconds left.

One factor in the game was the 14 points scored by the Packers off turnovers including a 37 yard interception returned for a touchdown by Nick Collins in the 1st quarter.

The victory capped off an improbable playoff run by the 6th seeded Packers who had over 15 players end up on injured reserve during the regular season and even lost three more key players to injuries during the game.
